Prof. Edward Newman works in security studies, broadly defined. Within this field, his interests lie in a number of areas: theoretical security studies, including critical approaches and ‘human security’; intrastate armed conflict and civil war; international organizations and multilateralism; and peacebuilding and reconstruction in conflict-prone and post-conflict societies. Between 1998 and 2007 he worked in the Peace and Governance Programme of the United Nations University, and his latest book is Understanding Civil Wars. He is also the editor of the journal Civil Wars and a founding executive editor of International Relations of the Asia Pacific.
